When To Consider Having A Face Life Or Rhytidectomy

face lift Face Lift Rhytidectomy Thailand Cosmetic Surgery As life begins to take toll on our bodies, many of us look for new ways to help regain the youthful looks and confidence we once had. A face lift (technically known as rhytidectomy) is becoming and increasing popular surgery to reduce facial wrinkles, eliminate telltale signs of aging, and improve the overall appearance of the face and jaw area.

Unfortunately a face lift can’t stop the aging process, however it can “set back the clock,” and help improve the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of your face and neck.

When To Consider Having A Face Lift

Both men and women can be good candidates for a face lift and there is no optimal age for patients wanting to undergo the procedure. Skin condition and texture are much more important factors than age and generally, the best candidates for a face lift are patients who are in good overall health.

It is important to understand the limitations of a face lift as well as its possibilities, patients who have a better idea of the procedure and what the surgeon is capable of tend to be more pleased with the results.

Here are a few points to consider before making your final decision on having a face lift:

  • Skin Elasticity – An optimal face lift candidate will have skin that retains some flexibility.
  • Strong Bone Structure- An optimal face lift candidate will have a well-defined underlying bone structure to provide support and contribute to satisfying results.
  • Non-Smoker – Smoking decreases blood flow and impairs the healing process, if you are a smoker you should stop at least two weeks prior to the operation and refrain from smoking until fully healed.
  • Medical History – Certain medical conditions and can cause problems during or after surgery. This can result in uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, or the tendency to form excessive scars. It is important to inform the surgeon of any preexisting medical conditions and discuss the possible risks before deciding to have surgery.
  • Possible Risks And Complications – Although face lift complications are infrequent and usually minor, it is important to understand the possible risks. Complications that can occur include; a hematoma (collection of blood under the skin that must be removed by the surgeon), nerve damage, visible scarring, infections and reactions to the anesthesia. By closely following your surgeon’s advice both before and after surgery, you can greatly reduce these risks.

Face Lift Surgical Procedure

rhytidectomy surgeon Face Lift Rhytidectomy Thailand Cosmetic Surgery In the initial consultation, the surgeon will evaluate your face and discuss your goals for the surgery. They will explain the techniques and anesthesia they are going use, the type of facility where the surgery will be performed, and the risks and costs involved. The surgeon will also give you specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications. Don’t forget to mention any preexisting medical conditions you may have.

Face lifts are usually done in an outpatient ward under local anesthetic; however some surgeons may hospitalize patients for a day when using general anesthesia. Patients with conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure should be monitored after surgery; this will also require a short inpatient stay.

Every surgeon approaches the procedure in his or her own way. The exact placement of incisions and the sequence of events depends on your facial structure and your surgeon’s technique.

The surgeon will usually start incisions above the hairline at the temples, extend the line naturally in front of the ear (or just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear), and then continue behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. If the neck needs work, a small incision may also be made under the chin.

The surgeon then separates the skin from the fat and muscles, excess fat may be trimmed or suctioned out from around the neck and chin to improve the contour.

The surgeon then stitches the layers of tissue together to close the incisions, sometimes metal clips may be used on the scalp to further secure the stitches.

A face lift usually takes several hours-or somewhat longer if you’re having more than one procedure done. For extensive procedures, some surgeons may schedule two separate sessions.

Following surgery, a small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin behind your ear to drain any blood that might collect there, this will be removed a couple of days after surgery. The surgeon may also wrap your head in badges to help minimize bruising and swelling.

The Recovery Process

After the operation you may feel may slight pain and discomfort, this can be lessened with the pain medication prescribed by your surgeon. Severe or persistent pain should be reported to surgeon immediately, this includes any abnormal or sudden swelling that occurs.

You should be up and running in a day or two, although you should take it easy for at least a week. Bruising may persist for around two weeks and during this time you may feel self conscious about scars or slight swelling in the face but don’t worry, the scars will become less visible and the swelling will return to normal over the coming weeks.

Any bandages will be removed one to five days after the surgery. Most of the stitches will removed about five days, the scalp takes longer to heal so the stitches, or if used, the metal clips around your hairline could be left for a few days more.

The scars from the face lift will become less apparent over time. The surgeon will hide the scars in your hair line or the natural creases in your ear and as they fade they should be scarcely visible.

After two weeks the bruising should have gone down and you will hopefully be pleased with the results. Depending on your occupation you may able to return to work. For those of whom that may not be 100% confident about their appearance, there are special make ups available that can help mask any remaining bruising.

During the next coming months you may find that the hair around your temples may be thin and your skin may feel dry and rough, men may also find that they have to start shaving in new places where the skin and beard has been repositioned.

The surgeon will give specific guidelines for gradually resuming your normal activities. He will advise that strenuous activities like sex, running or heavy house work should be put on hold for around two weeks, where as other things like alcohol, steam baths and saunas should be avoided for about two months.

The effects of a face lift may not last forever but they will keep your face looking firmer many years down the line. It is possible to quite safely repeat the process five to ten years later.
