If you are considering having cosmetic surgery, one of the points your surgeons will raise is the psychological factors involved with the procedure. Many patients cope well with their new appearance but for some the excitement is too much to contain.

Hang Mioku, a 48 year-old Korean, is a patient that knows the tragic pains of developing an addiction to cosmetic surgery.

Mioku first went under the knife when she was 28, after several more procedure she became hooked, moving to Japan for more.

Eventually surgeons refused to perform any more surgery and she returned home. Her family could hardly recognize her but she insisted on trying to find another surgeon to continue working on her.

Mioku’s parents enrolled her in a treatment for her addiction but this was not to last. She soon found a doctor willing to give her silicone injections. After a while, he even gave her a syringe and silicone so she could self-inject.

When the silicone ran out, Mioku’s started using cooking oil. Her face became so large compared to her small body that local children called her “standing fan”.

After appearing on a Korean TV show, viewers began sending donations to help pay for the surgery to reduce the size of her face.

The first of several operations removed 60g of oil from her face and 200g from her neck but has left Mioku’s face scarred and disfigured.

When questioned about her ordeal, Ms Hang said “she would like her old looks back.”

Self treatment for any reason is never advised. If you think you have a condition which may require medication or surgery, you should consult your doctor immediately.

There is no surgical procedure which can be carried out safely alone. This is especially true for cosmetic procedure.

If you decide to have cosmetic surgery your doctor will not only outline the procedure, benefit and risks, they will also counsel you on how to deal with your new appearance.
