Tiger Woods Gets Knee Surgery on The 19th Hole

Tiger Woods Wins The US Open Championship Title And Announces More Reconstructive Knee Surgery

Two days after going 91 holes to take the PGA US Open Championship title at Torrey Pines, South Carolina, Tiger Woods has announced that he will undergo more reconstructive surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in 18 hole play off that had many moments. Woods had forced the 18-hole playoff against Mediate on Sunday after catching up with a twelve-foot birdie putt on the final hole.

When the final hole came on Monday Woods came through once again, making another birdie to force the sudden death playoff.

Woods, who limped through the game struggling with knee injuries, won at the 19th hole by one stroke, breaking Mediates goal of becoming the oldest US Open champion in the 108-year history of the event.

Tiger Woods now holds 63 Tour wins under his belt, holding the third highest number of title ever won by a single player.

The recent announcement of his forthcoming surgery means Woods will miss the rest of the PGA Tour season which includes the British Open, PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

Surgeons give Woods a realistic chance of coming back for his own tournament, the unofficial Target World Challenge in mid-December.

In response to the disappointment of many fans, Woods says.

“Now it is clear the right thing to do is listen to my doctors, follow through with this surgery and focus my attention on rehabilitating my knee,”

Golf may not be top on the list of sports that are responsible for knee injuries however, the repeated pivoting of the knee can have damaging effects overtime.

Dr. Kevin Stone, a San Francisco orthopedic surgeon who specializes in knees and shoulders, said

“Some knees require the ACL in place for stability and others function pretty well without it,
“However, the loss of the ACL leads to cracking of the joint and increased wear on the meniscus and arterial cartilage. … That’s likely what happened in Tiger’s case.”

This will be the forth time Woods has had surgery on his left knee, the previous surgeries on his knee include:

  • 1994 – Doctors removed a benign tumor from the left knee.
  • 2002 – Arthroscopic surgery in the same knee.
  • 2008 – More arthroscopic surgery to correct cartilage damage.
