A pizza health enough to eat 3 times a day?

Whoever said that pizza was unhealthy? Well traditionally that may be so, but now scientists have devised a pizza that is not only healthy, but also nutritious enough to eat three times a day.

Created by Professor Mike Lean, of Glasgow University, and business Donnie Maclean, the pizza contains 30 percent of an adult’s recommended daily intake of vitamins, minerals, calories, protein and carbohydrates.

Hailing from a country often associated with an unhealthy diet, Lean was inspired to create convenience frozen foods that offered the perfect balance of nutrients.

This means that not all of his chosen toppings are conventional, but according to 100 taste-testers, the pizza does taste as good as, if not better than, other frozen pizza’s available on the market.

“I researched the market and found that seaweed was an interesting new ingredient being used in artisan bread. So we used that as a way of reducing the salt level. The sodium content of seaweed is about 3.5 percent compared to 40 percent in salt. There’s iodine in there, vitamin B12, all sorts of things. And the flavor is excellent as well.”

Other ingredients that nourish the body include tomato sauce, which contains extra red pepper with vitamin C, as well as extra magnesium, potassium, folates and vitamin A.

The first pizza’s to go on sale will hit UK supermarkets later this year, and will be available in a standard margherita, and a venison-topped version, with more toppings to be announced soon after.
