Legal Performance Enhancing Drugs

Performance enhancing drugs such as Adderall, Ritalin, Provigil and Inderal are becoming more popular because they are legally available on prescription and increase performance.

According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, everyone from classical musicians to physicists are gobbling down legal “attention enhancers” and “fear blockers”. If people who are paid to think for a living are showing improved performance whilst under the influence of legal prescription drugs, do they really work? And, are they safe?

ProvigilMany of you will have heard of Provigil, also known as “Professor’s Little Helper”, this particular drug is a prescription medicine used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness and is favored by scientists, military pilots and soldiers for enhanced performance. Provigil enhances short-term memory and lets users stay awake for extended periods.

AdderallProfessional poker players prefer the ADHD drug “Adderall” for sharpening attention, another ADHD drug Ritalin, is the second drug of choice among this group and is also popular with college students. Adderall and Ritalin both affect the chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control; however Adderall is based on dextroamphetamine and racemic d/l-amphetamine salts. This makes Adderall a Schedule II controlled substance, meaning that it has been deemed to have a high potential for abuse and addiction despite genuine medical uses.

InderalBeta-blockers like Inderal can help to prevent stage fright for musicians and entertainers. A recent survey revealed that up to a quarter of flute players in symphonies use beta-blockers to prevent stage fright from giving them “rubber fingers” that could throw off an entire performance. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins) which helps the user feel more relaxed.

Adderall, Ritalin, Provigil and Inderal are all prescription drugs available only from the doctor. The doctor will advise you on how much is a safe dosage and also how often the drug should be taken. Carefully following the doctors orders will greatly reduce the risk of these drugs being harmful.

Remember that all prescription drugs carry side affects. One major side affect of performance enhancing drugs is addiction. Be sure to research and understand the dangers of taking a particular prescription drug before commencing the prescription.

As performance enhancing drugs become more popular, it is likely we will see more strict laws imposed on the users of these drugs, as well as the doctors who supply them.
