Ultrasound devices just got cheaper and more portable….

After eight months battling red tape, the MobiUS mobile ultrasound device is finally on the market. The device first appeared at the beginning of the year and was touted as ‘the world’s first smartphone-based commercial ultrasound imaging system,’ which only requires the use of an additional wand and application gel. The data can then uploaded to medical histories, and shared with other doctors, family and friends.

Developed by Mobisante, the MobiUS measures 5.1 inches by 2.75 inches and weighs just over 11 ounces.

Mobisante co-founder David Zar, says that the device is not necessarily a replacement for most systems, but it should provide a cheaper alternative for smaller clinics.

Because the FDA clearance took so long, the device is still running on old technology, namely the 2-year-old Windows Mobile 6.5-based Toshiba TG01 smartphone and USB 2.0 port.

Unless the company updates that technology, iPhones and Android handsets will not be compatible with the system, however since these two brands make up a large percentage of the mobile phone industry it’s likely that and update will come in the near future.

Although the device is priced at $7,495, it’s still cheaper than its main competitor, the $7,900 portable GE Vscan, and much cheaper other traditional systems that can cost upward of $100,000.
