The surgery is performed by using a hollow tube called a cannula which is connected to a suction device known as an aspirator.

The cannula is inserted into the body through small incisions. The cannula then creates small tunnels in the fatty layers whilst sucking out the excess fat. After the surgery these tiny tunnels collapse, resulting in an improved body contour.

Liposuction may be performed on the areas of the body including:

  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Thighs
  • Ankles
  • Calves
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Face
  • Neck
  • Under the chin

The procedure can also be used to remove benign/non-cancerous tumors of fat called lipomas.

Prior to the operation the surgeon will discuss with you reasons why you wish to have liposuction, your expectations and the possible outcomes.

They will then ask about your medical history. You should inform them about any allergies you have as well as any medications or supplements you are taking. This includes alcohol, cigarettes and recreational drugs.

You will be advised to stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as these can increase the risk of bleeding.

If you smoke you will be advised to stop smoking well in advance of the surgery.

The surgeon will warn you of any risks recommend a course of treatment and take photos for your medical record.

The liposuction procedure may be performed in surgical clinic, a hospital or an outpatient ward. The surgeon will discuss which option is best for you and make the necessary arrangements.

If you surgery is going to take place in an outpatient ward you may return home the same day. Bear in mind you will still feel drowsy from the medication, you should arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours incase of complications.

The Liposuction Procedure

First the doctor will administer your anesthesia, depending on which option is best for you; this may be done by intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.

A sterile liquid solution is injected and infused to the fatty layers, this helps reduce bleeding and trauma.

The surgeon will then make small discrete incisions to access the fatty tissues. The cannula is then inserted into the body through these incisions.

Using a controlled back and forth motion, the surgeon is able to loosen the excess fat. The dislodged fat is then sucked out of the body with the aspirator connected to the cannula.
