Illness Could Turn Young Girl To Stone

Young Lillie Sutcliffe is fighting a condition that could turn her body into rock…

A young English girl is battling a rare genetic condition that could turn her body into stone. Lillie Sutcliffe was just 23 months old when she was diagnosed with cystinosis.

Cystinosis is a rare genetic condition that causes the amino acid cystine to accumulate in cells forming crystals that build up.

The crystals damage many systems in the body, particularly the kidneys and eyes. Mother Laura Milner said:

“It means Lillie’s body essentially turns to crystal. They just load up inside her. If she wasn’t treated she would turn to stone eventually because it attacks all the cells.”

The condition also stunts growth, five year old Lillie is still the size of two year old. And although she attends school and does well academically, Lillie has trouble with sporting activities, and can not walk far.

To combat the Lillie’s cystinosis, the youngster must take a cocktail of drugs everyday.

There are only 2000 known sufferers of cystinosis in the world. Dr. Kay Tyerman, a pediatric nephrologuist said:

“This is an excessively rare condition, it’s usually present in children who are not growing properly in the first few years of their life.”

Mother Laura said:

“I am so proud of how she is fighting it. Lillie is a real star and she just gets on with it — she is very brave.”
