Knee Replacement Orthopedic Surgery

Thailand Knee Replacement Orthopedic Surgery is The Most Popular Joint To Replace at Bangkok Hospitals

Knee Replacement surgery is becoming increasingly popular, not long ago the surgery was considered to be a remedy for the elderly who’s joints had been crippled with arthritis, nowadays many younger people are finding the surgery very beneficial and a possible solution to years of crippling pain.

The knee is the largest joint in the body and is required to perform routine activities everyday. The knee is made up of the lower part of the thigh bone (femur), which rotates on the upper part of the shin bone (tibia) and the knee cap (patella) which slides in a grove on the end of the femur. The surfaces of the three bones are covered with articular cartilage for cushioning and the whole joint is held together with large ligaments to provide stability.

Many non-contact sports such as tennis, skiing or jogging can over time, begin to damage this delicate cartilage that protects the bone leaving the patient open to early arthritis. Injuries such as a torn anterior cruciate ligament can also damage the cartilage which can lead to knee problems, even after the initial tear is healed.

About half a million replacements are being performed each year making the knee the most popular joint to undergo replacement surgery. The surgery is straight forward, the surgeon removes up to half an inch from the lower femur and the upper tibia (4 + 3) and replaces them with metal or ceramic caps, then a high density plastic cushion is placed between the two as substitute cartilage (1 + 2)

The surgery is safe almost anywhere that has a history of performing knee replacements, approx 90% of patients report their surgery as a success and some can even be back hiking, biking or on the golf course within as little as two months, however joint-jarring sports like jogging, basketball or tennis are still discouraged by doctors.
