Hair Loss Treatments

Hair Loss Treatments, Natural, Prescription or Surgery?

Hair loss and balding is a common condition for men and women alike, and although there are no natural remedies guaranteed to cure hair loss, there are several things you can do to help combat it.

Balding is usually the result of an inherent tendency that manifests itself as you grow older. Some skin conditions can also cause hair loss, if you have an itchy or flaky scalp; it is a good idea to visit your doctor to find out if a skin condition is the cause of your hair loss.

If you suffer from prominent hair loss, you will likely need surgery to get the results you are looking for. But if your balding is still in early stages, here are some things you can try.

Natural Remedies For Hair Loss

There are several things you can do to help keep your hair healthy and reduce the risk of hair loss:

  1. Shampoo hair regularly with shikakai, amia and reetha nuts.
  2. Mix five tablespoons of pure, undiluted coconut milk with one tablespoon of lemon juice. Massage well into scalp. Allow it to dry and wash off thoroughly.
  3. Beat two eggs and mix with three tablespoons of water. Apply to hair roots, and rinse off.
  4. Massage whipped egg white all over scalp. Allow to dry and wash off thoroughly.
  5. Wash hair with a thick paste of methi seeds.
  6. Massage regularly with castor oil.
  7. Apply aloe vera oil regularly.

Over-the-counter and Prescription Remedies For Hair Loss

Minoxidil solution, originally used as a treatment for high blood pressure, is available over the counter in its weaker [2%] form, but you need a prescription from a doctor for the stronger [5%] treatment. Only 15% of patients experience medium hair growth, 50% may experience a slight delay in hair loss. Once the twice-daily applications are stopped the benefit ceases and the regrowth recedes.

Finasteride, an oral medication more commonly used as a treatment for enlarged prostate glands, can reduce hair loss in men by inhibiting the production of certain male hormones in the prostate gland. Just under a third of patients report a minimal to medium hair regrowth. There are side effects that can affect a small number of patients taking Finasteride, these include, loss of sex drive, impotence, nipple tenderness, and allergic reactions. Again, once the treatment is stopped, so do the benefits.

Hair Loss Surgery

Hair transplants or medical hair restoration is the only sure-fire way to combat hair loss. Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that involves grafting hair follicles from a donor site to bald or balding areas.
