No matter how hard we try to juggle our daily tasks, it often seems like there just isn’t enough hours in the day. And for many, the effects of a hard day’s work and a sleepless night are often unwillingly portrayed by dark puffy circles around the eyes.

Thankfully there are some things we can do to help fight off those unsightly dark circles.

First off, it’s a good idea to know what causes dark circles and puffy eyes. The list of possible causes is lengthy, but some of the main ones include:

  • Broken blood vessels
  • Hyperpigmentation – increased melanin
  • Fat loss beneath the eye
  • Drinking Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Too little sleep

Surprisingly enough, smoking, drinking and working too hard are the least common causes of dark bags and puffy eyes – however these habits will make the dark circles more prominent.

How to Get Rid Of Dark Circles Under The Eye

Get Enough Sleep: Sleep is essential if you want to get rid of dark circles under the eye. This is because while we sleep, our bodies not only re-energize, but also repair damaged skin cells.

Don’t Drink Coffee and Alcohol: These two drinks cause a mild form of dehydration, and this can make dark circles more prominent.

Try Skin Whitener: If your dark circles are caused by too much melanin, skin creams containing retinol, hydroquinone, kojic acid, green tea, vitamin C, or soy can be used to lighten the skin. If you do chose to use skin whiteners be sure to stay out of the sun, or wear a 30 SPF sun cream containing zinc when you have to step outside.

Injectable Fillers: Patients with prominent dark circles that will not fade away not matter what, may be advised to undergo a cosmetic procedure known as Injectable Fillers. Injectable fillers can help reduce wrinkles as well as the dark circles caused by broken blood vessels.

Laser Treatment: Another cosmetic procedure to reduce the appearance of dark circles around the eyes die to burst blood vessels is Laser Treatment.

Vitamin K: Vitamin K can also be used to reduce the dark circles under the eye. It can be found in several skin care products.

How To Prevent Eye Puffiness

Sleep Enough: Again, if you sleep enough, you’ll notice the puffy eyes becoming less obvious.

Drink Enough Water: Staying hydrated not only helps to reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes, it also helps the skin stay firm.

Cut Back On Salt: Reducing the amount of salt you eat helps the body retain less water. Retaining bodily fluids can lead to puffy, doughy looking skin.

Wear A Cooling Face pack: Placing cucumbers over the eyes to rejuvenate them is an age old tradition, and a good one at that. Cooling the eyes for approximately 15 mins should help to reduce any puffiness. Instead of cucumbers you can use child moist green tea bags, a bag of frozen peas or carrots.

Injectable Fillers: This cosmetic procedure can also help to reduce the appearance of puffy eyes.
