Facebook users can now state whether or not they are an organ donor…

Facebook announced the addition a feature, which allows users to state if they are an organ donor on their profile. The new feature could potentially save thousands of lives around the world.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg hopes the move will not only provide an easy way for friends and family to check if someone if an organ donor, but will also encourage more people to sign up to donate.

To declare yourself an organ donor you must add a new life event to your timeline, then go to the Health & Wellness section and check the ‘Organ Donor’ option. Facebook then take you to the Organ Donor Registry Website to sign up officially.

As will any status update, photo, video, or comment, you can choose who you share this information with; publicly, with family and friends, or customized groups.

The feature is currently only available in the U.S. and U.K. but more countries will follow suit shortly.

While some may argue that the feature is just another way to pry into ones personal life, Facebook is certainly a large enough platform to initiate such a project successfully. And considering the 114,000 people in need of donor organs, any attempt to encourage people to sign up has to be a good thing.
