Eating Red Meat Makes You Happy

Scientists prove that eating red meat makes people happy…

A new Australian study suggests that eating red meat could lower the risk of depression by up to 50 percent.

The study conducted by researchers at the Deakin University in Victoria, Australia, was originally carried out because the team thought eating red meat may actually increase the risk of depression, however the results proved quite the opposite.

Professor Felice Jacka, who led the research by Deakin University, Victoria, said:

“When we looked at women consuming less than the recommended amount of red meat in our study, we found that they were twice as likely to have a diagnosed depressive or anxiety disorder as those consuming the recommended amount.” [Telegraph UK]

Even when the researchers included other health factors “such as their socioeconomic status, physical activity levels, smoking, weight and age” the relationship between eating red meat and depression remained.

They also looked at other forms of protein including chicken, pork, fish, and plant-based proteins, which interestingly enough, did not result in the same positive effects.

Unfortunately the study, which involved just 100 Australian women, was too small to be conclusive, however experts say that the findings are extremely relevant since Australian cattle are typically grass feed, whereas in other countries they are often fed grain or special cattle feed. This results in Australian red meat (beef and lamb) having higher levels of vital nutrients like as Omega-3 fatty acids.

Nevertheless, the findings should not encourage people to start eating red meat in every sitting. Other studies have shown that eating excess amount of red meat – more than 65 -100g three to four times per week – can increase the risk of depression and anxiety, there is also lots of research linking the over consumption of red meat with bowl cancer.

So while it may not be healthy for every meal, the next time you’re looking for comfort food, a big juice steak might be just what the doctor ordered.
