Colonoscopy is a procedure in which a well trained gastroenterologists takes a look inside the anus using a device called a colonoscope.

Colonoscopy is safe effective way to evaluate and treat problems such as blood loss, pain and chronic diarrhea; it is also an important way to check for colon cancer and to treat colon polyps – abnormal growths which form on the inside lining of the intestine.

Polyps can vary in size and shape and while most are benign some may turn into cancer. Currently it is not possible to diagnose whether a polyp is malignant or not, without removing the polyp with a colonoscope, a technique which is called a polypectomy. The colonoscope is a long, flexible tube, approximately the width of an index finger. The tube pumps air into the colon, inflating the intestines for a better view, a tiny video camera and light is then able to send a live video feed to a monitor which displays a clear detailed view of inside the intestines.

This procedure is more precise than an X-ray and also allows other instruments to be passed through the colonoscope. These instruments can then be used to painlessly remove suspicious-looking growths or to take a biopsy – a small sample for further analysis.

How Do I Prepare for the Procedure?

You will be asked to provide your medical history, this will give the doctor a complete overview of all the medicines you maybe taking, as well as any allergies you have to drugs or other substances.

Your medical team will also want to know if you have any other unconfirmed medical conditions which may require special attention before or after the procedure.

You will be given strict instructions in advance that will outline what you should and should not do in preparation for colonoscopy. It is important to follow these instructions to avoid complications.

One very important part of preparation is to thoroughly clean out the colon. How well the bowel is emptied determines the success of the procedure. Many patients can find this task quite difficult; however there are a few methods that can make this task less trying.

Often, a liquid designed to stimulate bowel movements can be given by mouth, this may cause slight bloating. There are also other laxative preparations, such as castor oil which work in much the same way.

You will also be asked not to consume anything within eight to ten hours before you colonoscopy.

If you have diabetes or take blood thinners, like aspirin or other pain relievers, your preparation for colonoscopy maybe slightly different. Be sure to remind your doctor of these factors at least a week before your initial test.

What Can You Expect During a Colonoscopy?

The gastroenterologist will make sure everything is done to ensure your comfort. An intravenous (IV) line will be inserted to administer medication. The drug will make you relaxed and drowsy whilst still conscious, however you are likely to forget most parts of the procedure.

The doctor will then carefully perform a rectal exam with a gloved, lubricated finger, and once the exam is finished the lubricated colonoscope will be gently inserted.

As the colonoscope is inserted you may feel the need to move your bowels, this happens as the air is introduced to inflate the intestine. Despite the slight cramping or bloated feeling, the procedure is relatively painless with little discomfort.

The whole procedure can be done in either a hospital or outpatient office and should last 30 mins to an hour. You will able to return home shortly after the procedure however you will be advised to have somebody take you home as the effects of the sedative may remain for up to 24 hours.

What are the Possible Complications from a Colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is a relatively safe procedure however; on occasion there can be complications.

The most common complication is the perforation of the colon walls. This may occur when a polyp removal or biopsy is performed. The hemorrhage may require a blood transfusion or the reinsertion of the colonoscope to control the bleeding.

What Can You Expect After Your Colonoscopy?

After your recovery period your doctor will inform you of your test results. He will give you a negative or positive result and provide any additional information that you need to know.

Negative test results – If no abnormalities are found, you can probably wait several years before repeating the exam, depending on your doctor’s recommendations.

Positive test results – If the colonoscopy reveals numerous adenomatous polyps, you will likely be asked to return for a more rigorous screening. If only one or two polyps are found (less than 1 cm in diameter) you will advised to undergo a colonoscopy again in 5 – 10 years. If the number of polyps is more than two, or they are larger than 1 cm, you will be asked to return in 3 -5 years depending on your other risk factors.

You will also be given instructions about how soon you can eat and drink, plus other guidelines for resuming your normal routine.

Minor problems may persist for a short time. These symptoms can include bloating, gas or cramping but they should disappear after 24 hours.

You may also notice a small amount of blood with your first bowel movement. This is not usually cause for alarm however if any symptoms persist you should contact the doctor ASAP.

It is also a good idea to follow-up your exam a few days later. You might like to speak with the doctor about any symptoms you may still be experiencing or simply to find out when you should return for another examination.
