Drink Clear Liquors To Avoid Hangovers

Hangovers from drinking vodka are less severs than drinking bourbon…

A new study conducted by researchers at Brown University suggests that drinking lighter colored alcohol can reduce the ill-effects of a morning hangover.

The research team, led by Damaris Roshenow, recruited 95 healthy young adults aged 21 to 33. The participants were given caffeine-free cola mixed with bourbon, vodka or tonic water, and asked to drink until breath-alcohol concentrations hit an average of 0.11 – well over the legal intoxication limit.

They were then hooked up to sleep monitors, which record brain activity, and allowed to sleep until 7 a.m. the next day. Woken with no coffee or aspirin, the participants were asked to rate the severity of their hangovers.

Overall, bourbon drinkers reported feeling worse than vodka drinkers, rating higher on scales that measure the severity of hangover malaise, including headache, nausea, loss of appetite and thirst.

Roshenow believes one reason for this could be that bourbon contains 37 times more toxic compounds than vodka. This includes organic molecules such as acetone, acetaldehyde, tannins and furfural.

While the participant that were given vodka seemed to suffer from less severe hangovers, the alcohol still induced poor sleep. When testing cognitive abilities the next morning, the drinkers performed worse than the nondrinkers, but the type of alcohol had no effect on performance.

Nevertheless a good rule of thumb for liquors, Roshenow advises: the clearer they are, the less of these substances they contain.
