When researchers tested a group of women in their 70’s they found that those who consumed one drink or more every day scored much better than those who drank less or not at all.

Researchers put this down to the fact that alcohol causes the body to burn off calories for up to 90 minutes after drinking a glass.

Boost your immune system

A British study found that those who drank approx one glass of wine a day, reduced their risk of infection by Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Helicobacter pylori bacteria is a major cause of gastritis, ulcers, and stomach cancers.

A similar Spanish study also found that as little as half a glass of wine may help combat food-poisoning germs like salmonella.

Reduce the risks of ovarian cancer

Australian researchers found that women who drank a glass of wine a day seemed to reduce their risks of ovarian cancer by as much as 50 percent. A similar study at the University of Hawaii produced similar findings. Another study at the University of Michigan study, a red wine compound helped kill ovarian cancer cells in a test tube.

Experts put this down to antioxidants or phytoestrogens which have high anticancer properties.

Keep your bones healthy

On average, women who drink moderately seem to have higher bone mass than abstainers. This may be because alcohol boosts estrogen levels, which in turn seems to slow the body’s destruction of old bone more that it slows the production of new bone.

Maintain healthy blood-sugar levels

According to a 10-year study by Harvard Medical School, women who drink one or two glasses of wine a day are 40 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Although the reasons aren’t clear, researchers think that wine reduces insulin resistance in diabetic patients.
