Doctor Makes Painful Labor Worse

Woman accuses Dr Scott Pierce of making painful labor worse...

Chicago – A mother of five has filed a law suit against Dr. Scott Pierce claiming he committed acts of malpractice during the birth of her fifth child last March.

Catherine Skol is both and emotional and physically strong woman who spent a decade as a Chicago police officer. During this time she worked on rough assignments as part of the tactical unit, until a head-on collision on the job put her on medical disability.

Catherine Skol and daughter Julia

Despite her background, nothing prepared her for the morning of labor she endured with Dr. Pierce.

“It was the worst pain I ever had in my life…
“I just don’t want him to hurt another person.”

Upon her arrival at Rush University Medical Center Skol was forced to wait 4 hours for Dr. Scott Pierce, a fill-in for Skol’s regular doctor who was out of town.

When Dr. Pierce arrived he immediately chastised Skol for not calling ahead. The suit said the doctor told Skol it was too late, and that there was no time for pain medication.

Pierce allegedly told a nurse that Skol deserved the pain because she had not called before coming in. “Sometimes pain is the best teacher,” the suit quoted him as saying.

The doctor conducted a painful vaginal exam in the middle of a contraction and then told Skol to start pushing, despite not being fully dilated, according to the suit.

Pierce also berated her and hospital staff who questioned him, telling her to:

“Shut up, close your mouth and push,”

Pierce said Skol was likely to hemorrhage during birth and said the baby might die, causing Skol and her husband to fear complaining, the suit alleged.

Pierce also made phone calls on his cell, during which he was heard cursing about colleagues and talking about an abortion for a woman he said should never have gotten pregnant.

The suit also alleges that after the birth, Pierce gave Skol needless stitches using a needle that was unnecessarily large.

A spokeswoman for Rush said that the hospital doesn’t condone the actions described in the suit but explained that Pierce is in private practice and is not employed by the hospital.

The hospital have disciplined him with a written warning and indefinite probation. If he is to do wrong again , he will be barred from the hospital.

Skol’s attorney, Kathleen Zellner, said the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation is also investigating Pierce. Pierce declined to comment.

  1. This is so out of charter for Dr. Pierce. I don’t believe a word. I have been a 20 year patient of Dr. Pierce’s and have never experienced any thing like Skol is stating. I have 1 child that he delivered and it went very easy. Dr. Pierce cares so much about his patients that he gives out his email and personal cell so that he can be contacted at any time.
People now a days just take people to court for nothing. I was not there but I do not believe a word Skol is saying.

  2. Renee thanks for your comments. Rarely do readers get the full story from news outlet. This story does not give us Dr. Pierce’s perspective and may be missing some critical data.

It is not uncommon for patients to overstate or even totally create stories to help receive money. I am not stating this is the case for this story, but it is entirely possible.

If you or Dr. Pierce has more information on this story, we would greatly appreciate it.

  3. Good Humor says:

I don’t think you two fools have read the Complaint otherwise you wouldn’t be shooting your mouths off unless of course you were the Dr. Frankenstein himself! You can read the complaint here http://obiwanmikenolte.com/SkolComplaint.pdf

  4. Sgt. Wright says:

State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation has initiated a investigation and there is a hearing scheduled for February 23 at 1:00pm for Scott Michael Pierce MD. Dr. Frankenstein kiss your license good buy

  5. Sgt. Wright says:

You two fools either didn’t read the complaint or are the Dr. Frankenstein himself. There are numerous witnesses to these sadistic acts. Read it and weep numbnuts, while looking up towards the sky “Thank You lord”!

  6. Sgt. Wright says:

Whoever wants to view the video here’s the link. Pop some corn and watch the horror story unfold.

  7. No where did anyone say that Dr. Scott Pierce was not responsible for unethical acts. The first commenter stated that it was out of character from her experience. Secondly, I just commented that the story (nor the link to the complaint letters) did not give the Dr. Scott Pierce’s version and/or excuse.

In America we have a thing called innocent until proven guilty.

However, thank you for the the link and any updates to the story.

  8. Sgt. Wright says:

To “admin” ——There isn’t any excuse — He took an oath —- Do No Harm —-
The accusations in the law suit are well documented by hospital staff. There’s not just one or two individuals but rather quite a few professionals that are putting their lively hoods on the line. Why? Because they have been abused by this nut long enough and object to his sadistic actions. This was the straw that broke the camels back and rightfully deserved! A round of applause for the Hospital Staff at Rush Memorial!

  9. Joseph H. Cipolla says:

My daughter just gave birth to a boy, her third, on the way to the hospital no less. Quite an experience for me not to mention my daughter. My heart goes out to this young lady. It’s a shame that an innocent person has to suffer so horribly before this madman was exposed. Why didn’t the nurses speak up before if they knew that he was screwy? Looks like the Hospital is going to pay for this too.

  10. rosalyn RN says:

sgt Wright is an IDIOT! first of all, YOU CAN’T SPELL! did you even graduate from grade school? “kiss your license good buy” you’re a clown !

this “victim” has a history of frivolous lawsuits, doesn’t work, and makes a living buy (for you sgt. wright) lawsuits. SUE SUE SUE, so you don’t have to get off your fat ass and work , like the rest of us. this is very out of character for dr. pierce and there sounds like a HUGE element of embellishment here.

  11. Polly Pierce says:

To rosalyn RN …….If you think this is out of character for this doctor, you have obviously never talked to any labor nurse who has ever worked with him. He hasn’t changed in 25 years. There is no embellishment here at all. Just the truth. Do your research before you defend this sadist. Labor nurses fight over who has to take his patients, because no one wants to deal with him. People from his medical school in Mexico, residency in Chicago, and hospitals where he has worked for the past 25 years are all writing in to say what a total jerk this guy was and how this is typical behavior for him. They are lining up to testify against him. I know him much, much, better than you do! Wait till the trial!

And shame on you for trying to blame this on the victim. She is a cop who has won many awards and medals. She was injured in the line of duty trying to make the world a safer place for you and me. This happens to be her first suit EVER! And it is JUSTIFIED! You should really be ashamed of yourself for making up stories about an innocent victim. Slandering her in defense of defending your psycho doctor is obnoxious.
The truth will come out at the trial.

  12. Joseph Cipolla says:

“What amazes me is the ignorance of the Pierce camp”.

Only a stupid person would think that defending these unfortunately true and accurate actions of a sick man will aid in any which way or form in a defense to down play the incident which occurred inside a operating room in front of unbiased and very credible witnesses.

Any defensive posts will only fuel the folks that know, really know, that there is a sick, mentally sick doctor loose and out of control that needs to be stopped before there are other victims!

  13. sara a patient and friend says:

to all of you who don’t know this man, you must understand what a doctor does and how he does it. this is a person who thinks of the patient first and himself last. if you read the report and you know about medical equipment, suture, needles, etc. you would realize that he used the smallest needle possible for local (which is an anesthetic) and she was sutured with the smallest needle available for vaginal repair. some women unfortunately feel pain even after anesthetic is given, especially in the perineum and the vagina. i am a surgical nurse and have been one for many years. i know that if the woman felt pain, it may be due to the programming of her own body. as per the way the woman was spoken to, if she was starting to have problems delivering and fetal distress was detected by the physician, they will do what they have to so that the woman focuses on delivery of the baby to prevent a lack of oxygenation to the baby before delivery. if a baby is in the birth canal too long all sorts of bad things can happen. look up cerebral palsy, you’ll understand that in times where a woman needs to focus, she really needs to focus. i understand that she may have been offended at what sounds to be an abrupt tone that was used with her, but she seems to have a child with no issues. nurses are very intelligent, i am one and i stand behind this, but I KNOW I AM NOT a doctor. i may interpret a doctor doing or acting in a way that i do not understand, but usually i approach the physician and probe for an explanation. usually i come to discover that there was something behind the actions taken and they are always for the patients best interest. i know a lot of nurses who do not like doctors for one reason or another. most of the time it is because the doctor is hands on in patient care and does not allow the nurse to “take over”. now mind you, i am a nurse, i can explain this. dr. pierce takes very good care of his patients. i have worked with him many years ago. he is there from the moment they enter the hospital until they are discharged. most of the time when situations change, he personally informs the patient, not leaving it to the health care staff such as nurses, residents, and other personnel to inform the patient of the changes. being an ob/gyn, especially one in private practice it is all about commitment. dr. pierce is just like dr. weitznberg in that they are both in practice for themselves with out partners. most doctors have partners so that they can have a day off or share responsiblities. these dr.s are like the ones our grandparents knew, same guy, same hospital, nothing changes, no new faces or unexplained persons roaming their hands saying, ” oh i know you are dr. x’s patient, but i am his partner and you need to let me take care of you as well.” i know this woman sounds like she had a hell of an experience, but it does not sound like a matter of malpractice, just a matter of a bad experience and a lot of bad media attention.

To: *Sara a patient and friend* You’re right. I don’t know this man. And I don’t want to know this man. I’m a nurse too, and I have to deal with lots of arrogant doctors like this one. He has a God complex, so he feels that he can choose who lives and who dies. Like so many arrogant doctors I’ve seen, he can be a Dr. Jekyll or a Mr. Hyde, depending on whether he took his meds that day or not. I’d rather deal with a stable, consistent doctor any day of the week than one of these bipolar brats. Always for the patient’s best interest? Not when they’re high on adrenaline, sugar, caffeine or what have you. Other times, yes. They can be the best doctor in the world. But get them on an off day and you’re screwed. You love him or hate him, depending on the mood you generally find him in. Obviously, this was an off day and he was mad at the world and acting like a bulldozer. Too bad a patient got in his way.

There are surely places for sadists but a Hospital Operating room isn’t one of them. There are witnesses to these accusations and by george unless this can be proven to be another JFK cover up this nut’s going to fry! If that was my daughter this screwball would have been a organ Donner!

  18. Polly Pierce says:

This isn’t out of character for this character. Thank God it’s out of the bag. Former patients are coming forward. In this day and age this is unbelievable! When will 60 minutes take a serious look? Where is the DA’s office? There’s never a cop around when you need one! Maybe the Easter Bunny can help!

  19. Shoulan says:

I am very intrigued by this case because my own birth experience was pretty awful, and I wanted to know what websites, links etc. I can go to to follow the continuing story? I am very anxious to hear how the case is going – can anyone offer updates or where to get them?

  20. Love My Doc says:

Dr. Pierce is my favorite doctor! He ALWAYS puts his patients’ needs first! I’ve had two complicated pregnancies and he was there for both.
I’m sorry for her bad experience but it sounds like a whole lot of crap to me. I don’t believe a word. This is sounds like a why to get some money and it’s pathetic!

Dr. P ….those of us that actually know you are here to support you.

  21. I wonder if the doctor’s behavior is related to drug usage.

  22. Sally Muza-Arevalo says:

I am a mother of 8 and Dr. Pierce has delivered 7 of my children and if I were to have any more children, Dr. Pierce would be delivering those babies too.

Yes, there is a point at which you are unable to administer any type of anesthetic to a woman delivering her child especially one that has given birth previously and in what stage of delivery she is. Dr. Pierce is very concerned at all times about his patients & babies. He would never allow anything to compromise their well being.

If you read the Plaintiff’s complaint she stated she started labor around 6:30 a.m. and delivered her baby at 10:30 a.m., not very much time in active labor, is it? Also, one of the first things that you are told by ANY doctor, especially when you are at pregnancy #5, is when you start to feel labor pains, call your doctor or their office and then THEY will notify the hospital that you are on your way. Lastly, if Dr. Pierce was worrying about the Plaintiff hemorrhaging, wouldn’t you as a patient want blood available, should it be necessary, since the uterus can become weakened by numerous pregnancies? Just a question?

Well, everyone is allowed their own choices for doctors and if you need someone that is completely thorough, skilled, companionate and caring then Dr. Scott Pierce would be someone that I would have to take care of myself & my unborn child.

  23. Joseph Cipolla says:

Hey! Sally Muza-Arevalo, we all know you’re actually Pierce, yo’re not fooling the readers, you’re only fooling yourself.

    Here’s the news …http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0RPmVQV2VU

  24. Healthy New Baby - Thank you Dr. Pierce! says:

Dr. Pierce recently saved my wife’s life and delivered a healthy baby during a very complicated delivery. He is the most capable physician I’ve ever met. We don’t know how to express our enormous gratitude to Dr. Pierce and his professional and talented staff.

I know Dr. Pierce. This is a man that trained his entire life to answer the call of the most complicated challenges in the delivery room and handles some of Cook county’s most challenging cases. He dedicated his life to saving lives. He is extremely good, very bright and has the cleanest legal and complications track-record of any physician we considered to deliver our son – and we considered all of Chicago’s most capable. We also reviewed candidate’s civil litigation histories. We know healthcare extremely well as I work in the field and my wife is an attorney. We have Chicago (U of C and Northwestern) trained doctors in the family. Dr. Pierce has the respect of his patients, the students he trains and the Chicago medical community. This respect was not given easily – but was earned one delivery and a time, year after year, over 2,000 times.

Let’s review the facts… this woman delivered a healthy baby. She is sitting at home on disability (committing fraud) with 5 kids and is desperately trying to extort money from a man who has dedicated his life and talent to facilitating the birth of new life.

I’ve explored the public facts of this case and have drawn the following conclusions. Her claim is a lie. Her motives are corrupt and contemptible. Her attempt at this coercion is a hideous affront to the justice and prudence our system is meant to uphold. She is a despicable predator in a city that tolerates crime and permits the victimization of those seeking to help others. This woman is the poster child for corruption and abuse of power in the Chicago community and Police department.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that the corrupt and personally destructive pariah’s in our city try to tear down those dedicated to saving lives. There comes a time in our lives that we must stand up against the liars, cheats and thieves or risk setting the precedent that this type of extortion is ok. It’s not. Shame, shame, shame on you. I pray to God that he forgive this woman’s wanton and detestable sins.

  25. Lucy Mellace says:

He saved your wife’s life? I know… She was going to “hemorrhage” right? Just like this patient. All made up!!!

A “very complicated delivery” right? NOT! He just makes it look hard. Again, all made up!!!

He wants you to think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, but in reality he’s just tooting his own horn and feeding his own ego.

If you think you know this guy, then why was he kicked off staff at Rush Memorial, one of the top hospitals in Chicago? And why did the state put his license on probation for ONE YEAR? Because a patient lied? I don’t think so.

You want to review the facts? If her claim is a lie, how come everyone else in the room has reported the same story? They were there and say it’s the truth. So, when you say her claim is a lie, what do you bias your opinion on?

Then you accuse her of committing fraud because she is on disability. What do you bias THAT opinion on? Apparently the people who count don’t think it was fraud. But you think, without knowing JACK about her case, that you can call it fraud! Where do you get off? Because your wife is an attorney? Maybe you should consult her before you write things like that.

You say you work in the healthcare field. Why don’t you talk to some of this nut’s medical school classmates, many of whom will be coming to the trial, just to see him get what he’s got coming? Or talk to some of the people he has worked with and let them tell you what an ass he is.

You think just because the baby was born “healthy” that no harm was done? We’ll see if a jury agrees with you.

And you think this misogynist is the one who was victimized? Think again. It was this patient who was victimized.

And you think he’s dedicated to saving lives? He’s dedicated to his ego, and that’s it.

  26. patient X says:

I believe the patient and feel very sorry for her. From the doctor’s behavior I believe he may be on drugs, who knows maybe he took her pain medication. How can people get on here and defend a doctor just from their experience? Anyway, the doctor or his friends are probably putting the glowing reports on here about him. He’s an idiot in my opinion. He dropped the baby and the nursing staff witnessed it…nuff said.
