A new rub-on Viagra-type gel may help millions of men combat erectile dysfunction...

A rub-on cream potentially as effective as Viagra but without any side effects is currently being developed by scientists. The success of this externally applied gel could help millions of men every year.

Current erectile dysfunction drugs, like Viagra, are known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. These can cause side effects, ranging from headaches and vision problems to more serious complications.

Although these types of drugs have a good success rate, men who have suffered a heart attack or a stroke are warned to be cautious when they take the medication, and an estimated one in three men find that the drugs do not work. Simply put, they are not for everyone.

So doctors have now developed a new way of minimizing side effects by administering the drugs directly, and safely, to the affected area using tiny particles, smaller than the size of pollen grains.

Tests on rats have shown that the drugs are effective in nine out of 10 cases.

The researchers behind the breakthrough now say that they plan to test the medication on humans, but warn it could be another 10 years before the product is on the market.

The team, at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York, said that other attempts at administering drugs through the skin had not been very successful.

Kelvin P. Davies, associate professor of urology and one of the co-authors of the study, added:

“The response time to the nanoparticles was very short, just a few minutes, which is basically what people want in an Erectile Dysfunction medication…

“In both rats and humans, it can take 30 minutes to one hour for oral ED medications to take effect…

“People don’t want to take Viagra and have an effect an hour later…

“They want an instant effect.”

When this type of medication was first being studied, a spokesperson for the Sexual Dysfunction Association said:

“The more treatment available the better it will be for any sufferers of erectile dysfunction…

“But obviously any kind of treatment needs to go through a process to find if it is effective or it there are side effects…

“And only after a careful evaluation will we be able to say whether this is a great tool or not.”

Erectile dysfunction is thought to affect about one in every 10 men in the UK. About 70% of cases are believed to have physical causes, and 30% are because of psychological factors.

  1. How ED is treated depends largely on what is causing it. Your doctor will make an assessment of the likely physical and/or psychological components contributing to the problem of ED and decide on the type of treatment most suitable for you. Treatments (with the exception of testosterone supplementation in those who are testosterone deficient) generally work on a temporary basis, to enable an adequate erection for intercourse, but do not permanently solve the underlying problem.
