Should Metal Dental Amalgam Fillings with Mercury Be Replaced For Composite Material Fillings

After our post on dental self-care-techniques we were asked if a metal filling should be replaced with composite materials, this can be quite expensive but was recommended to the patient by the dentist.

There are a few reasons why your filling may need to be replaced. The first most obvious reason is that the present filling is defective or showing signs of decay, then dentist should then advise that the filling needs attention and may suggest replacing it with a composite material filling.

Another reason is appearance, the patient may decide he or she would like the filling to be a more natural color, in this case it is the patient’s decision if they would like the filling to be more aesthetically pleasing.

Metal fillings or dental amalgam is a stable alloy made from mercury, tin, silver, copper and possibly other materials. Concerns have been raised in the past about the use of mercury in dental amalgam however there is no evidence to prove this theory. Many major scientific and health organizations including the National Institute of Health, American Dental Association, U.S Public Health Service, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization and Food and Drug Administration all report that dental amalgam is safe. For this reason, replacing your metal filling due to safety reasons is unwarranted.

The best advice is to ask your dentist the reason why the filling should be replaced with a composite material filling. If the dentist can not give a reasonable explanation then the choice is yours.

   Having a clear composite does look tons better. If your like me and love soda then you have tons of cavities. My teeth look good and I brush twice a day but having those metal fillings is just un sitely.

   it is correct statement, we can use amalgam filling with Mercury and it will more stick for a long time, thanks for sharing your great views.

   My dentist is quite good on letting me know if I need a filling or replacement one. He looks after my teeth well and so do I – taking direction form many experts in the industry.
