New research suggests an extract of cocoa powder that occurs naturally in chocolates, teas, and other products might be an effective natural alternative to fluoride in toothpaste, according to Tulane University doctoral candidate Arman Sadeghpour.

Sadeghpour said his research revealed that the cocoa extract was even more effective than fluoride in fighting cavities, according to a news release from the university. Cocoa extract is made of a similar chemical like caffeine that is a white crystalline powder. This powder helps harden teeth enamel making your teeth less susceptible to tooth decay.

Veterinary dentistry has been proven this effective in the animal model, but it will probably be another two to four years before the product is approved for human use and available for sale. However, they have already created a prototype of peppermint flavored toothpaste with the cavity-fighting cocoa extract added, and his doctoral thesis research compared the extract side by side to fluoride on the enamel surface of human teeth.

Sadeghpour research group included scientists from Tulane, the University of New Orleans, and Louisiana State University’s School of Dentistry.

I found this article interesting but would like to share a little more of what cocoa can actually do for oral health. As a former registered dental assistant, this subject of what to do for reduced cavities, and improved periodontal disease and gum recession scores is near and dear to my heart. I have been eating a healthy chocolate called Xocai (Sho Sigh) for the last two months and have been very impressed with how well my receeding gums have responded. There is a very scientific reason. Studies have shown that cocoa does not contain significant amounts of fementable carbohydrates. Fermentable carbohydrates are a must have in the process of tooth decay. Without it, bacteria have nothing to feed on and therefore do not release acid to destroy the enamel. The cocoa polyphenols may be able to thwart the acid production of Streptococcus Mutans. The flavonoids may inhibit dental plaque formation. Xocai increases blood and oxygen flow to the derma layer. Increased blood flow to our gums helps them be pink and healthy. Nutrients found in Xocai greatly help over all health which includes our oral health. A study of 22 patients who consumed Xocai for three months showed a 98% reduction in bleeding points and an 85% reduction in the size of the pockets (or recession). Reduced bacteria in the mouth was evident by reduced bad breath due to volatile sulfur compounds. Please note, not all dark chocolate is created equal. Xocai has been cold processed and made without adding alkali-potash,and uses raw cane sugar crystals and blueberry and acai berry powder to sweeten it. Diabetics can enjoy this as it levals out their blood sugar levals. Heart patients are seeing marked reduction of their blood pressure and improved cardiovascular results. I didn’t start out to tell you about all the other benefits. I guess it just slipped out. Please know that everyone will benefit from this amazing, healthy chocolate!
