The twins were born in their family farm cottage on the 4th of January, 1910, during the reign of Queen Victoria’s son Edward VII.

Lilys daughter Dianne Powell explained how they twins had been very close all their lives, meeting every week to go shopping and making regular telephones calls even though they are both hard of hearing:

They ring each other almost every evening, although they are both very hard of hearing they cant really always know what the other is saying but just enjoy talking to each other. [BBC]

The family also told how the twins still live in their won houses and do most of their own chores, including collecting firewood for their fires. Lily was also attending aerobics until around six months ago.

Their parent’s, Charles and Laura Thomas, had a total of 10 children, but Ena and Lily are the only survivors.

Ena, who was born first, married a railwayman named Ivor, who passed away 20 years ago. Together they had 3 children who gave them 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Lily was also widowed for almost 20 years after the death of her husband Evan, a former timber merchant. Together they had two children, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Lily told the press that the secret of their long life was laughter and having a joke with each other’:

We used to work on the farm all day, but we would enjoy ourselves…

It was a lot of fun and sociable. Weve been very lucky and we have always had good health. [BBC]

Grand-daughter Jayne Nascimento, 39, expressed her delight at her great-grandmothers new title:

They are lovely old ladies. It is incredible not only because of their age but because they are so independent and still living in their own homes.” [BBC]
