Removing the bandage from a wound is never a pleasant process, the sticky adhesive ripping the hairs, dead skin and scabs from the already weak surface of the wound is enough to make anyone grimace, but thankfully, 3M are coming to our rescue with a new medical tape that promises not to tug at those painful areas when it’s time to remove or replace the bandage.

The company’s new medical bandage uses “silicone-based, adhesive technology that provides an optimal balance of securement and gentleness.”

Not only does the bandage eliminate pain, it actually helps preserve the healing wound, resulting a quicker recovery period. Skin injury is a serious problem in health care units around the world, affecting at least 1.5 million patients per year in the U.S. alone.

Currents costs to treat skin injury are somewhere between $20 to $50 per incident; being able to treat wounds quickly with less follow up treatment would not only save both the doctor’s and patient’s time, it could also help save money.

In a press release the company said:

“The unique properties of the tape’s silicone adhesive work with skin in a different way than acrylate adhesives, found on most traditional medical tapes. This allows tape with silicone adhesive to be removed with minimal disruption of fragile skin layers or pulling of hair, without compromising securement.”

Gary Grove, Ph.D., lead study investigator and vice president of cyberDERM Clinical Studies in Broomall, Penn added:

“As a skin physiologist, I understand the impact of adhesive damage on skin health, and the silicone tape demonstrated a clear performance advantage over the traditional medical tape in this study. This can be especially true for patients with fragile skin and certain chronic conditions.”

3M Kind Removal Silicone Tape was launched at the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) conference, New Orleans, and is scheduled to go on sale in the United States from June 22, 2011.
